From the outset, I have committed to creating a genetically powerful purebred operation. The initial cow herd was developed by buying select females from Fischer Angus & Quarter Horses and Breton Red Angus. I have been a repeat buyer at the Northern Select sale – always selecting genetics which compliment the existing herd. Breeding stock from cow families such as Erica, Tibbie, Blackbird and various Geis females created the backbone of the performance genetics. The proven cow genetics combined with current AI sires such as New Standard, Cheyenne, In Focus, Major League, Avalanche and Strategy make for an exciting calving season. The cow herd boosts genetics from the top side from sires such as Twister, Coldstream Academy, TC Foreman, Glacier and King Rob.
What I believe sets my breeding program apart is the extent to which I use AI. Ninety (90 %) of my cowherd is AI’d. Clean-ups are run two weeks later with the best herd sires. For full details of AI and herd sires see Reference Sires.
My goal is to continue to upgrade the quality of my females so that, in time, I will be breeding high percentage genetic AI females to AI bulls. I maintain the integrity of my operation with a select breeding program. I want hard working females. They are carefully selected for their frame, past production and pedigree. The result – calves with low birth rates who gain weight at a strong, curve bender. HRH 1S is a great example. Born at 92 lbs he weighed 1013 lbs at 278 days – an average daily weight gain of 3.3lbs with no creep feed. Check out more of my herd by viewing my Bull and Hefs Gallery.
Animal health is an integral component of my breeding program. From the outset, I used the services of Dr. Randy Killeen, a veterinarian (and rancher). Randy established vaccination and synchronization programs that are strictly followed. Randy has also been a key contributor to the selection process. His eye for maternal traits and sire selection are second to none. You can count on healthy operations from the Hahn herd. |
